Teeth Cleaning

Teeth cleaning, also known as dental prophylaxis or professional dental cleaning, is a preventive dental procedure performed by a dental hygienist or dentist. It involves the thorough removal of plaque, tartar (hardened plaque), and stains from the teeth to promote oral health and prevent dental problems. Here's what you can expect during a teeth cleaning appointment:

  1. Physical Examination:

    • Before the cleaning begins, the dental hygienist or dentist will visually examine your teeth and gums, looking for any signs of oral health issues such as tooth decay, gum disease, or other abnormalities.
  2. Scaling:

    • The dental professional will use a handheld instrument called a scaler or an ultrasonic scaler to remove plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces, including along the gumline and between the teeth. The scaler effectively loosens and scrapes away the deposits.
  3. Dental Polishing:

    • After scaling, a special dental instrument with a rotating rubber cup or brush, along with a gritty toothpaste-like substance called prophylaxis paste, is used to polish the teeth. This process helps remove surface stains and gives the teeth a smooth and shiny appearance.
  4. Flossing:

    • The dental professional will carefully floss between your teeth to clean areas that may have been missed during brushing and scaling. This helps remove plaque and debris from between the teeth and promotes healthy gums.
  5. Fluoride Treatment (optional):

    • Some dental cleanings may include a fluoride treatment, especially for children or individuals at higher risk of tooth decay. Fluoride is applied to the teeth in the form of a gel, foam, or varnish to strengthen the tooth enamel and provide added protection against cavities.
  6. Oral Health Education:

    • Throughout the cleaning appointment, the dental professional may provide oral hygiene instructions and tips tailored to your specific needs. They may demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques, discuss the importance of regular dental care, and provide recommendations for oral care products.

Teeth cleaning is a relatively painless procedure, although some patients may experience mild sensitivity or discomfort during scaling if they have sensitive teeth or gum inflammation. If you have concerns, it's important to communicate them to your dental professional, who can take measures to ensure your comfort.

Regular teeth cleanings are typically recommended every six months as part of routine dental care. However, the frequency may vary depending on your oral health needs, such as the presence of gum disease or a history of dental issues. Your dentist or dental hygienist will recommend the appropriate interval for your specific situation.

Teeth cleaning is an essential component of preventive dental care, helping to maintain oral health, prevent gum disease, and contribute to overall well-being. It complements regular at-home oral hygiene practices, including daily brushing and flossing.
